Advertising and Virtual Personal AssistantsΒΆ

We are predisposed to purchase items based on information we receive from our friends purchases or recommendations. A Virtual Personal Assistant (VPA) has the potential of filtering Ads that are potentially useful to us. Moreover our personal information can remain completely private. Like a spam filter, our VPA can filter out extraneous messages aimed at influencing us.

A VPA can act as a recommender, suggesting ideas far more congruent to its owner’s actual needs and desires. One user writes (May 15, 2013):

Currently, Google and others primarily watch which web sites I visit and then feeds back advertisements that mirror my most frequent web site searches. For example, I was recently doing many web searches for printers, and now I get recommended advertisement next to Google searches showing various printer choices. However, I bought my new printer over two months ago, and I still keep getting advertisement for printers. This is really dumb. Google should be able to realize I already bought a new printer and shift their recommendation advertisement over to something else that I might want or need.
